How Exercise Affects the Immune System

You probably know what foods you need to be eating for a stronger immune system. It is as easy as adding fresh, unprocessed protein, vegetables, fruit, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds to your daily and weekly diet for you to start feeling better. It's a wonderful bonus that many of those foods are excellent for providing other health advantages like a strong heart, better brain functioning and an improved respiratory system. Speaking of bolstering your heart, brain and respiratory process, exercise can provide those benefits as well. And you don't have to take up hours of weekly strength training or run 5 miles every day to benefit. Actually, over-training and exercising too hard can have a negative effect on your body's ability to fight off infection and illness. How "Smart" Exercise Works to Boost Immunity There is a lot of research on the multiple benefits of exercise. You feel great about yourself, you sleep better, your brain is more crisp and clear, and you ...

Back To School and How Do I Keep My Kids Healthy?

Well, most students have started back to school and college students will soon be as well. How are we going to keep them healthy this year? The answers most health professionals will give you is prevention and healthy immune systems. Let’s talk about prevention first. We all know now that washing your hands often is one of the best ways to prevent getting sick. It’s impossible not to touch contaminated surfaces especially in areas where large people congregate, like schools. So washing your hands with soap and water is your first line of defense. Washing before eating, after using the restroom and after times of touching multi-touched surfaces is key. Do not use antibacterial soaps. Overuse of these types of soaps along with the overuse and misuse of antibiotics are part of the reason we have some of these superbugs today. Plain old soap and water, washed well enough and long enough is plenty good enough. Haven’t we had this drilled into our heads enough by now? Next, we ...

Immunity Super Pack

While the latest news on the Coronavirus is scary, there are things you can do today to help keep you and your family healthy. Remember, most healthy people will recover if they do get infected, so please don't panic and use good sense. Using the following practices will help protect most everyone. This is what we use in our home: Wash hands - Drill this into your head and your children's heads. We should already be washing our hands often and well, but this latest virus drives this point home. Washing hands is one of the best things you can do to prevent illness. Hand sanitizier is most effective against bacteria, but has little effect on viruses. Disinfect with a good germicide that has ingredients that have been proven in lab studies to work against this type of virus. Bleach only has a limited time factor for killing viruses of about an hour. A good germicide is better and will continue to kill viruses on hard surfaces for much longer. Boost your immune system with...

New Article: Interferons: Your Body's Natural Sentries

Interferons: Your Body's Natural Sentries Category: Healthy Body This is the latest health article in the Wellness Center. It talks about interferon. What Are Interferons? Interferons (IFNs) are a group of soluble glycoproteins that are produced and released from our cells in response to virus infection (and other stimuli). Infected cells activate them to warn neighboring cells, which then produce hundreds of proteins specifically to combat the intruders. Think of them as sentries that warn your body of an attack. Interferon protects us from illnesses by regulating and activating our immune system response. Read more of this article in the Wellness Center for free. It's information you can trust from doctors, nutritionists, research scientists. We personally use them especially when school starts back up because of the increased exposure to viruses. We have noticed a significant decrease in the amount of times we get sick and if we do succumb to a virus it is o...

Article: Benefits of Chewable Vitamin-C

In this week's article we share info about Chewable Vitamin C and why it is so helpful for both adults and children. What comes to mind when you think of what Vitamin C helps with? Immune health...that's right, but actually this critical nutrient is helpful for so many other functions in the body in addition to being a great immune booster. In the summer time we don't have too much of a problem getting enough Vitamin C in our diets because we have access to so many yummy fresh fruits & vegetables. Come fall and winter though, we tend to slack off on those good-for-us-foods and we then can become deficient in some optimum nutrients, Vitamin C being one of them. So I encourage you to check out this latest article in our Wellness Center and let me know your thoughts on it or let’s talk if you have questions.  If you aren’t a member of our Wellness Center click the link below and receive free access to this and all our great articles written by doctors, nutr...

The Trick After The Treat

Now, right after Halloween is when we see a surge in ear infections, colds, flu and other respiratory infections in children.  The link is the increase intake of sugar. Sugar lowers the immune system making us more susceptible to illness and infection because there just aren't enough "good guys" to fight off the bad guys. Plus, the ammo they use - the good nutrients from good nutrition, is missing.  The best way to keep your children and yourself healthy in addition to good handwashing is to eat healthy and exercise.  Candy may be overflowing in our houses right now, but counter it with healthy choices.  Teach kids it's OK to have a sweet treat now and then as long as they counter it with some of Nature's candy like fruits and fun veggies.  Teach them that the good food strengthens the good guys so they can fight the bad guys and the good food helps the body to be strong enough to handle the bad guys candy onslaught that makes the good guys weak.  In addi...

Health Tip - Antibiotics & Probiotics

In today's health tip I discuss what to do when taking antibiotics and probiotics, and when to take them. Here is the link to the probiotics I recommend to our clients -  Optiflora This is a system of both the Probiotic- Optiflora and the Prebiotics, which are essentially food for the probiotics.  If you are not used to taking a good probiotic, I recommend starting with only the probiotic capsules for the first 30 days, then slowly adding in the prebiotic powder after that.  If you take the prebiotics too quickly while your gut is trying to heal, it could cause some uncomfortable feelings in your gut.  So you will want to take it slow and use only the probiotic capsules at first. Confused? Please contact me for a consultation and I will be happy to help you decide which route is best to take for you. Happy gut health!  Here is the link to your Free Ebook - Nutrition Your Doctor Wasn't Taught I hope you enjoy it!

Test Your Cold/Flu Knowledge - Answer These 7 Questions

There are many misconceptions about the cold and flu. Take our short quiz and see if you can answer these questions. Answer true or false for these questions: 1. Getting wet in the rain will make you sick.   False There is no evidence that damp cold weather and the risk of getting a cold are related.  Modern science does not support a connection between being cold and getting a cold or flu. However, we've all had that time where we got chilled and whamo! We got sick! So what gives? Your immune system was already compromised by being exposed to a virus earlier.  Then your body had to work hard on keeping your temperature regulated when you got wet and then chilled.  This took away from the special fighting forces making you vulnerable to the virus taking over. While getting chilled didn't "make" you sick, it helped to contribute to it by lowering your immune defenses. So you will want to prevent getting wet and chilled if possible, and if you d...
