The Blood Sugar & Weight Connection

Weight loss has always been associated with calorie counting, restrictive diets, or rigorous workout programs. Just look at how many diet programs are out there making tall promises which only yield short-term, disappointing results. What most people don't realize is that there's an easier way to achieve sustainable weight loss, and that is by  balancing your blood sugar levels . Blood sugar simply refers to the amount of sugar or glucose in your blood, which comes from carbohydrates. During digestion, carbohydrates are broken down into sugar molecules and sent to your bloodstream, increasing your blood-sugar levels. The hormone insulin is then released to bring the sugar out of your blood – and into your cells to be converted into energy. Any excess sugar from your meal that isn’t being used for energy right away gets stored as fat. So how does all this work? Highly refined carbs like white bread, high fructose corn syrup, and other sweet carbs are quickly digested and absorbe...

I mention the Wellness Center, so here is the link to it:  https://youtobehealthy.yourwellnessproject.com I'm on a mission to turn sick care into well care. Want to come along?

How Exercise Affects the Immune System

You probably know what foods you need to be eating for a stronger immune system. It is as easy as adding fresh, unprocessed protein, vegetables, fruit,  legumes, grains, nuts and seeds to your daily and weekly diet for you to start feeling better. It's a wonderful bonus that many of those foods are excellent for providing other health advantages like a strong heart, better brain functioning and an improved respiratory system. Speaking of bolstering your heart, brain and respiratory process, exercise can provide those benefits as well. And you don't have to take up hours of weekly strength training or run 5 miles every day to benefit. Actually, over-training and exercising too hard can have a negative effect on your body's ability to fight off infection and illness.   How "Smart" Exercise Works to Boost Immunity There is a lot of research on the multiple benefits of exercise. You feel great about yourself, you sleep better, your brain is more cris...

Are You Upset Because You Tried Exercising & Now You Injured Yourself?

Started off too hard, too fast and injured yourself, didn’t you? I have done this before. I have also been mad and worked out too hard, too fast one day causing a really bad injury that took months to heal. So don’t ever feel you’re the only one who has done this. It’s easy to be motivated in the beginning to start working out. You pick out some great workout clothes, vowing that they will be too big for you to wear in a month. You then fall for that slick infomercial about how this special, scientifically studied, made just for you, exercise routine will be different than all the rest and you will finally be able to see the fat just literally melt off your body before your very eyes! So you download that series, or you decide to jog that mile, never having jogged since high school, when all of a sudden after 2 days, Wham! You’re sidelined with a pulled muscle, a severe back ache, or a swollen knee. Now you are lying on the couch with that ice pack as you dive head first into a ...

Cross Country Skier Kris Freeman - What He Uses For Energy

If you watched the cross-country skiing events during the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, you saw the bodies pile up as athlete after athlete collapsed at the finish line, racked with pain and gasping for air. “Viewers were alarmed, I realize,” said  Kris Freeman , “but that is just the sign of a great race.” The four-time Team USA member (’02, ’06, ’10, ’14) added, “In the perfect race we push hard over the last 1000 meters and then thrust our lead foot at the finish line. We’re weaving and wobbly, so it’s common to crash. Then we’re so blown we just lie there like we’re half dead.” But Kris’s pure love for the sport and his appreciation for his ability to exert keep him coming back for more. His story is remarkable for more than just his selection to four Winter Games; Kris is a Type 1 diabetic who has overcome numerous obstacles to compete as an endurance athlete at the highest levels for nearly two decades. His is still one of the fittest athletes on the planet even though ...

Why Body Mass Index (BMI) & The Scale Can Be Misleading

We've all heard how the scale is just one way to measure our health. We've also heard that our Body Mass Index (BMI) number is an important gauge to our health, too. You can easily find a chart online where you put in your height and weight and a magical number comes out to tell you where you fall in relation to weight based on the BMI categories. BMI Categories: Underweight = Normal Weight =  >18.5-24.9 Overweight = 25-29.9 Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater The problem with this chart is it tends to be used as an excuse for low weight or is the only factor used in deciding whether a person is overweight or not. While both the scale and BMI charts are good guides, it's important to note that there are other factors to consider, especially if the person in question is active and is eating healthy or not. I've known very fit and muscled men to be considered obese by this chart alone! While they knew they were not overweight, it was an ...

A Way To Lower Health Insurance and Health Care Costs

Money is a powerful motivator. What would you do if your insurance company or your employer offered you significant cash back for getting healthier? For losing weight, lowering cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, sugar, etc.? Would it motivate you enough to take the steps necessary to get healthier? Think about it....cash back in your pocket to spend on whatever you like.  It would be a wonderful way to get employees healthier, lower health care costs and lower insurance premiums. The ripple effect would be less missed work days, which equals more productivity for the employer and less out of pocket money for the employee. And the good effects just keep going. Healthcare, which is really "sick care" and the rising costs are a number one worry on most people's minds, especially as we age. It can make us feel like we have no control. But you have within your control the ability to lower your own personal costs. When you choose to exercise, eat healt...
