Why Gummie Vitamins Are Not As “Sweet” As You Think

In an effort to raise profits someone decided that marketing vitamins in gummie form would be a great way to make a lot of money – and they were right. It had very little to do with health and a lot to do with profit. So why did gummie vitamins become so popular? Because as parents, we are always looking for an easy way to get something healthy into our kids, but we are all so  busy that we often take shortcuts in the hope of at least getting something accomplished. Parents want their kids to be healthy and they recognize the need to supplement. However, often times kids go through picky stages and getting them to take a vitamin can be a challenge - One that many parents simply do not have the time or energy for. So insert the gummie vitamin. One that tastes just like the candy. The only problem is, they don’t work, are full of the same nasty ingredients as the candy and are a huge waste of money. Since gummy vitamins are not regulated by the Food and Drug Admini...

Why an Adequate Vitamin Intake is Critical for Good Health

Performing many roles to maintain good health and development, vitamins are essential nutrients that we can’t live without. Yet so many vitamins perform wonders that we’re not even aware of. That is… until we don’t get enough and a health problem surfaces. Vitamins are characterized by the following: They’re found naturally in food, in varying amounts. They can’t be made by the body (save for vitamin D after sun exposure). They are organic in their structure and can be broken down by air, heat or acid, making it more difficult for your body to absorb them since storage, cooking, and even exposure to air affects their chemical structure. They’re crucial for normal and healthy cellular development and function. Health-destroying deficiencies occur when your vitamin intake is too low. There are 13 essential vitamins which are divided into 2 categories: Water Soluble & Fat Soluble Water-soluble vitamins: Biotin (vitamin B7) Folic acid (folate, vitamin B9) Niacin (vitamin B3) Pantotheni...

Kids Love Sweets? Here's How To Cut Down Sugar In Their Diets

The American Heart Association recommends that sugar intake for children is limited to 3 teaspoons (12 grams) a day. A 12-ounce soda contains up to 10 teaspoons or 40g of added sugar, shakes and sweetened coffee drinks even more. Large amounts of added sugar can also be hidden in foods such as bread, canned soups and vegetables, frozen dinners, and fast food. In fact, about 75% of packaged food in the U.S. contains added sugar. Here are 4 ways to cut down sugar in your kid's diet: Don’t ban sweets entirely. Having a no sweets rule is an invitation for cravings and overindulging when given the chance. Give recipes a makeover. Many recipes taste just as good with less sugar. Try different mild spices to jazz up food. Avoid sugary drinks. Instead, try adding a splash of fruit juice to sparkling water or blending whole milk with a banana or berries for a delicious smoothie. Create your own popsicles and frozen treats. Freeze 100% fruit juice in an ice-cube tray with plastic spoon...

Who Has Been Licking The Storm Door?

Ever be in a hurry and try and clean the palm prints and tongue licks off your glass door before your mother-in-law pulls up?  It can be hard to tell which tongue licks are from the toddler and which ones are from the dog, can't it? But you're in such a hurry you aren't paying attention to which way the nozzle is facing when you pull the trigger. A face full of toxic chemical that is now blinding and gagging you does not make a pretty image when mother dearest walks in. This is why I use the Basic-H as my window cleaner. I'm a cheapskate and like that it only costs me pennies per bottle. And since I am always accidently spraying myself in the face I like the fact it's non-toxic. It really works great, too. Since it's safe to use, why not get the kids to clean the glass with it. At least the first two feet up will be clean and you won't have to worry about them being poisoned when you catch them licking it later.  Should I be worried? Other kids do this, too...

Back To School and How Do I Keep My Kids Healthy?

Well, most students have started back to school and college students will soon be as well. How are we going to keep them healthy this year? The answers most health professionals will give you is prevention and healthy immune systems. Let’s talk about prevention first. We all know now that washing your hands often is one of the best ways to prevent getting sick. It’s impossible not to touch contaminated surfaces especially in areas where large people congregate, like schools. So washing your hands with soap and water is your first line of defense. Washing before eating, after using the restroom and after times of touching multi-touched surfaces is key. Do not use antibacterial soaps. Overuse of these types of soaps along with the overuse and misuse of antibiotics are part of the reason we have some of these superbugs today. Plain old soap and water, washed well enough and long enough is plenty good enough. Haven’t we had this drilled into our heads enough by now? Next, we ...
