Kids Love Sweets? Here's How To Cut Down Sugar In Their Diets

The American Heart Association recommends that sugar intake for children is limited to 3 teaspoons (12 grams) a day.

A 12-ounce soda contains up to 10 teaspoons or 40g of added sugar, shakes and sweetened coffee drinks even more. Large amounts of added sugar can also be hidden in foods such as bread, canned soups and vegetables, frozen dinners, and fast food.

In fact, about 75% of packaged food in the U.S. contains added sugar.

Here are 4 ways to cut down sugar in your kid's diet:

  • Don’t ban sweets entirely. Having a no sweets rule is an invitation for cravings and overindulging when given the chance.

  • Give recipes a makeover. Many recipes taste just as good with less sugar. Try different mild spices to jazz up food.

  • Avoid sugary drinks. Instead, try adding a splash of fruit juice to sparkling water or blending whole milk with a banana or berries for a delicious smoothie.

  • Create your own popsicles and frozen treats. Freeze 100% fruit juice in an ice-cube tray with plastic spoons as popsicle handles. Or make frozen fruit kabobs using pineapple chunks, bananas, grapes, and berries. Smoothies made with milk, soy protein and fruit and freeze in reusable popsicle molds are really yummy.

There are lots of ways to cut down on the amount of sugar your little “sweetie” consumes. Think of and research creative ways to incorporate more natural fruit in their diet and learn ways to prepare food that isn’t bland, but isn’t full of added sugar either.

And no need to give up sugar treats completely, just make them the occasional “treat” like they were meant to be and everyone will enjoy them oh so much more.

The Secret of Basic H® in Your Garden

Summertime is when all of us want to enjoy the beauty and bounty of our gardens – but who wants to spend all their time taking care of them ? Basic-H® has been used for years by farmers and home gardeners alike to reduce the amount of watering time, improve the quality of the soil, and treat for pests. Even in those areas where Basic-H® Soil Conditioner is not available (Pennsylvania, for instance), you can still get great results by using Basic-H®, Basic-G ® and Liqui-Lea ®. The best information we’ve found on using Basic-H in the garden has come from MaryAnn and Mike Mizicko of Vienna, Ohio. Mike is a very successful truck farmer – and Basic-H is his secret! Be careful to note special circumstances, such as whether to spray on foliage, to apply only to the soil around plants, avoid spraying on blooming trees or plants, and other restrictions. Basic-H is a surfactant, not a fertilizer, so don’t use one concentration for all uses, or you will kill the plants you love. Soil P...

Where Are Your Vitamins Sourced From & Why Is It Important?

Do you know where your vitamins are manufactured? Do they do this kind of extensive testing? Is it safe? How do you know? I know, and this is why I only trust Shaklee. WHERE ARE SHAKLEE U.S. SUPPLEMENTS MANUFACTURED/INGREDIENTS SOURCED? Is another question I've received a few times lately. Here's the official reply: With the exception of NutriFeron (Japan) and our Shaklee 180 Meal Bars and Shaklee 180 Snack Bars (Canada), all Shaklee food and nutritional products are manufactured in the United States. We source ingredients worldwide, and whether some come from China, South America, the U.S., Japan, or New Zealand is not necessarily a measure of quality. The Shaklee approach to raw material sourcing for all nutritional ingredients has actually maximized product safety over our 60+ year history. In today’s global marketplace, where ingredients are sourced from worldwide raw material suppliers, we are keenly aware of the need for close oversight. Shaklee R...
