This is a picture of a pot I have. It is very old, old as me
I’d say. Let’s just say it was purchased either during the Kennedy or the
Johnson Presidency. To my knowledge the bottom has never been cleaned.
Call it lazy, call it being too busy, but I know I never got
around to cleaning the bottom and I think neither did my mother. I like using
her pots as she has been gone since I was a girl. I often think of her and
smile as I wonder what dinners she may have made (or burnt) in them. It makes
me feel special to know she once lovingly burned the same dinner I do!
My pots stay in the cabinet when not in use, and they get a
lot of use, so I never considered it a top priority to clean the bottoms of my
pots and pans.
I decided to take on the challenge of cleaning the bottom.
Why? To show you there are ways to easily clean pots and pans without poisoning
yourself.
See, the commercials for products you see where you just dip
the pot into a solution and wipe off really don’t work that easily on pots used
every day like mine and what they use is so toxic you risk poisoning yourself and
everyone else in your household not to mention the Environment when you dump it
down the drain.
Here is what I did.
I used Shaklee’s Scour
Off.
I scooped out a small amount, added some water, took a Miracle
Scrubber Pad and just started working it in. I didn’t have to work
hard and this picture was taken after just a moment or two or working it in,
then rinsing it off.
As you can see the copper is shining through. Yes, I know it still has some residue on the clean side, but I just went over it for a moment and this stuff is pushing 50 years old! I can get the few lines left off easily. If it looks a
bit dull it’s because I didn’t rinse and dry off very well. This stuff rinses
off easily, but I was in such a hurry to show everyone I took the picture right
away. That and my son’s bus was coming and I knew I was going to use it to cook
with in a minute! You’re a mom, you understand.
Shaklee’s Scour Off is amazing! I use it as an oven cleaner
and let’s just say my oven gets a lot of use and ends up with a lot spills and
spatters.
For an oven cleaner, if you don’t have a self-cleaning one,
heat oven to very hot for 30 minutes. Then turn off, open door to cool and as
soon as it’s cool enough to touch, but still warm, wet the surface and apply the
Scour Off with a damp scrubber and work in. Then rinse with a damp cloth.
If you do have a self-cleaning oven, go ahead and run it
through its cycle, then hit the areas it didn’t burn off with Scour Off on a
wet scrubber pad and rinse.
I have a glass top stove, which I love. Do you boil over
liquids or splatter food that gets burnt on as much as I do? It seems I can’t
cook anything without spilling it over the side and onto the hot burner,
seemingly encrusting it for life on the cooktop. For the top of the stoves to
clean off burnt on food or liquids that boil over, take a small amount of Scour
Off on a scrubber sponge, add water and work in, wipe clean.
Scour Off will not scratch most surfaces, but some scouring pads will, so watch
what you use to work it in with. I usually only use a dish rag that has a
scrubby side to it. If I need a scrubber pad with more muscle because I got
lazy and didn’t clean the spill till a week later, then I use the Miracle
Scrubber Pad.
Ever burn food in a pot, on a baking sheet or roasting pan? If
you have that residue left over Scour Off is great at getting those stains out,
too!
Scour Off can be used on surfaces that do not scratch easily,
so I don’t recommend using it on delicate chrome or other soft metals. If
unsure, test in a small area first with water and again, watch what pad you are using.
You can use Scour
Off on most other surfaces like counter tops, tubs, tiles, grills,
toasters and more.
We even used it on our truck wheels. We bought this used
truck that had a buildup of this caramelized residue. My husband never believed
anything would get those wheels cleaned without scratching them. A little Scour
Off and a toothbrush and I had sparkling new looking wheels!
My husband owed me the dollar I bet him. Hmmm, I should have
bet him to clean the bottom of all my pots and pans.
If you have a stubborn stain or buildup on something, but
are afraid to use Scour Off due to it being a soft metal, you can try this
trick:
Take a sponge and thoroughly wet it. Apply a small amount of
Scour Off to the sponge and work in well. Then squeeze the Scour Off “juice”
onto the area to be cleaned and softly clean with a wet soft sponge or rag. I
have done this on soft metal like chrome to get tar off and other items without
scratching.
One very important thing to remember when using Scour Off -
Use plenty of water and watch that the pad you are using isn’t scratching. So
no brillo pads or other metal scrubbers as they are scratchers. With Scour Off
you don’t need to “scratch” the dirt off!
Comparable to Ajax® with Bleach Powder Cleanser and Comet®
with Bleach in the removal of kitchen grease and grime.
Here are just a few of the dangers of using store bought,
toxic oven cleaners and scouring agents:
Contains lye, which is highly corrosive. Vapors are highly
toxic and can damage lungs, brain & kidneys. Burns the skin, mouth throat
and stomach. Causes permanent blindness.
Yikes! Who would want to expose themselves to that just to
have a shiny bottom on their pot or a clean oven?!
Here is some info on the safety and effectiveness of Scour off:

So you can clean your oven, your stove, your pots and pans
and many other dirty, grimy things without poisoning yourself, the kids, the
dog or the Environment.
I almost forgot! To show you how safe Shaklee’s cleaners
are, our new puppy who is a “greedy-gut” meaning she is always hungry, is
always at my feet in the kitchen. When I was cleaning this pot, a piece of
Scour Off fell to the floor. In a heartbeat she had gobbled it up! I wasn’t
worried though as I know Shaklee’s cleaners are non-toxic. She is fine and was
begging for more!
You can’t say that with other store bought cleaners and if
she had gobbled up some of those other toxic scouring cleansers, my son would
be crying his eyes out over the death of his puppy.
What if she was a toddler instead of a dog? Think about that
for a moment. Should you really have to risk the safety of your children and pets
just to clean a burnt pot?
NO!
It’s time to switch to safe cleaners that actually work.
Did I also mention they save you money? That’s right.
Shaklee’s cleaners and laundry products are so concentrated you save hundreds
of dollars every year!
