Do you suffer from insomnia?
We have all been there. We’re exhausted, we go to bed hoping
for a good night’s sleep only to watch the clock…all…night…long. Ugh! Why won’t
our brains stop thinking so much and just let us rest?!
I hate the times when my brain has me mulling over every
mistake I’ve made, every stupid thing I’ve said or done, when all I want to do
is sleep!
Those are the occasional insomnia nights, but what if it
becomes chronic? What if every night
is like that? What is a safe way to get to sleep without turning to drugs?
One quick way to cure insomnia is exercise. If you think you
are too tired during the day to exercise, still give it a try. Just a little
exercise can do you a world of good and it will give you the energy boost you
need to tackle your day.
I’m not saying you have to train like you are entering a
triathlon. Easy exercise like walking, light aerobics and lifting light weights
can be enough. Just do something, anything, to get moving.
As we all know, exercise helps us build strength and stamina
as well as lose weight.
But did you know it also helps us sleep better? It really
does.
Just make sure you don’t exercise too late at night or the
energy boost it gives you may cause you to stay up later, defeating the purpose
of getting more rest.
Get up earlier and do your exercise. I know it seems hard at
first, but try it for a week and stick with it. You’ll be surprised at how much
more energy you have and how much easier it is to fall asleep.
Another thing to consider is what are you eating and
drinking during the day? We all know how caffeine can keep us awake, but many
other foods can, too. Too much sugar is a huge contributor to insomnia. Sugar
is not just in cakes and candies, but also in processed box and canned foods,
which are loaded with sugar and salt. These convenience foods are big culprits
in causing insomnia.
It always goes back to more fruits and vegetables, less red
meat, less fat and sodium. Isn’t it funny how so many health related problems
are caused by poor nutrition and how the answer is always the same?
Not enough vitamins and minerals is another problem. It is
impossible to get everything your body needs from diet alone. Supplements are
necessary to fill in the gaps.
When our bodies don’t have enough of the right nutrients to
build healthy cells and maintain our systems properly, then the body is working
harder than it should just to keep going. Without enough of the right nutrients
to do its job effectively, something has to give and often the inability to get
a good night’s sleep is a first sign.
A good multi-vitamin/multi-mineral with
enough of wholesome nutrients is crucial to building the foundation to good
health.
Calcium with magnesium is wonderful
in helping the muscles relax.
And for the occasional times when our brains won’t shut down
and let us sleep, we have an awesome product that is non-habit forming and works
quickly - Shaklee’s Gentle Sleep Complex. This unique Shaklee combination
features passion flower, German chamomile, and valerian. Valerian has been used
for over a thousand years to help maintain a calm state, promote relaxation,
and foster restful sleep.*
I love how this product just helps me fall asleep and stay
asleep without feeling groggy the next day.
So exercise, eating right and supplementing a good diet are
all natural and healthy ways you can fix your insomnia, whether it is just the
occasional night of thinking too much or if your insomnia becomes more chronic.
You do have alternatives to the drugs that can make you
sicker and more and more dependent on them for a good night’s sleep.
Well that and a good conscience, but that’s a whole other
talk show. :)
To your good health,
Julie
